A superb example of a Georgian miniature portrait attributed to the prolific and highly regarded George Engleheart (1750-1829).

Portraits such as this were painted before the age of photography, as a keepsake. They were extremely popular with Naval families, as the men spent long periods away from home. Examples of George Engleheart's work are on display today at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

This portrait features an unknown gentleman, painted in watercolour on ivory. The portrait is set in a copper coloured base metal and a later, Victorian 9k gold chain.

Size of pendant 41mm x 36mm (1.6 x 0.7 inches).

The chain measures 19 inches in length.

This portrait has received clearance for sale under UK authorities.
